Having spent most of my life in Kenya, East Africa I was facinated to hear MBT footwear, otherwise known as Masai Barefoot Technology.
MBT footwear are most definitely not a fashion statement and can look a bit odd. Invented in 1997 by Swiss Engineer Karl Mueller, Mbt's are seen as a highly performing fitness aid. MBT's are designed to be flexible, comfortable and breathable and their uniquely designed sole, very similar to the 'tyre shoes' often worn by East African Tribal people, are said to simulate walking around barefoot in the sand. Mbt's are slightly weighted and distribute pressure evenly across the whole foot area and as your body responds to the weight and instability of the mbt footwear's sole , muscles, particularly those neglected, are forced to work to put right this instability. Is there then a nicer way to get fit when the only aid you need is a pair of MBT footwear? MBT's can have a beneficial effect on the whole body and MBT footwear are said to enhance both training and massage effects on the body. Here's why:

- All you need to do is walk. Walking is possibly one of the , most popular, simplest, cheapest and enjoyable recreational activities that exists. Walking alone improves circulation, boosts the immune system, strengthens the lungs and heart, improves your mood, improves muscle tone and gets you out of the house. Add a pair of Mbt footwear to the equation and many of the benefits are magnified and muscles, not often used, start to be trained.

- Strengthened and more balanced muscles. The gentle rocking movement of the foot when wearing a pair of MBT footwear strengthens the core muscles of the body and tones muscles in the legs, feet, and back, flattens the stomach, strengthens pelvic floor muscles. Mbt's relax and improve your bodies posture. Just improving muscle tone can have a very beneficial effect on the self confidence of an individual.

- Improved Circulation which will aid with weight loss and expulsion of toxins from the body leading to better all round better health, boosted energy levels, and according to testimonials a possible reduction in cellulite...this is a point that can, however be debated. Boosted energy levels can lead to improved concentration levels and better performance through the day.

- Mbt footwear help to reduce muscle tension via an improved overall posture, which in turn may assist reducing, in particular, spine, hip and knee joint ailments.

- Help to improve the appearance of varicose veins.

Care must be taken when wearing the footwear for the initial time, at least until the unusual action of the footwear has been gotten used to. Don't try and wear them for too long when you first purchase them as you will be utilising muscles that may have not been excercised for a very long time! Consider breaking them in in the home before venturing out on rougher terrain. Mbt footwear are meant to be worn on a daily basis for the best results. Most users are satisfied with the results and find wearing of the footwear became easier as their muscles were training harder and producing the desired effects.

Specific footwear care must also be considered when wearing an Mbt footwear as water, rain, oil and animal faeces may assist in breaking down the composite of the sole.

MBT's are now more widely available. MBT footwear are not the cheapest training footwear on the market but for those wishing to invest in their health you can buy sport mbt footwear, casual mbt footwear, mbt sandals and mbt hiking boots and the range is ever increasing.

Has anyone heard of RYN total fitness shoes that are really big in Europe right now? http://www.rynshoes.co.uk … They look similar to MBT but claim to have better quality, stability and energy return. Plus I can see more style! They also have a Sports High model for people like me who want the maximum strengthening & toning results! Does anyone know where I can buy RYN Footwear in the United States?
